DAP calls for the release of the status of MACC's corruption investigation on Taib Mahmud

Media Statement by DAP Sarawak state chairman and MP for Bandar Kuching, YB Chong Chieng Jen in Kuching on 13 Feb 2014:

Though many Sarawkians will agree with Taib’s parting statement “Sarawak for Sarawakians”, equally many if not more, will also agree that Taib will not be a suitable candidate as the Governor of Sarawak.

The fact that the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) has set up a special multi-agency task force to investigate the corruption allegations against Taib speaks volume of the seriousness of such allegation.

The setting up of a special task force to investigate Taib was announced in June, 2013 by the Commissioner of the MACC.  Since then, the MACC has not made any announcement whether the investigation has been concluded, or whether Taib will be prosecuted.

As such, technically, Taib is still a “suspect” of corruption allegations and therefore to have a suspect to be the Governor of Sarawak will put the State of Sarawak to disrepute and shame.

Therefore, it is absolutely not proper for Party PBB to propose Taib as the Governor of Sarawak and also not proper for the Rulers to accept such nomination.

As to the MACC’s investigation on Taib, having the benefit of hindsight on the events that unfold, it seems that the MACC’s investigation on Taib is more a political ploy by the Federal Government to force the resignation of Taib rather than to genuinely investigate on the allegations of corruption against Taib.

DAP welcomes the resignation of Taib as the Chief Minister of Sarawak.  DAP is equally of the view that “Sarawak for Sarawakians”.

Most importantly, DAP stands firmly on the principle that all investigation on corruption allegations must be carried out fairly, effectively and efficiently to bring the culprit to book.  Investigation on corruption allegations should not be used as a tool to achieve other ulterior or political motives.

Before Taib’s nomination for the Governor of Sarawak is formally submitted to the Rulers, DAP calls on the MACC to make public statement on the status and outcome (if there is one) on its investigation of the corruption allegations against Taib Mahmud.
